EAST LONDON COUNCIL REPORTED TO EUROPEAN
COMMISSION OVER SPITALFIELDS DEVELOPMENT

26 November 2001

Jean Lambert, the Green MEP for London, has made a formal complaint to the
European Commission that Towers Hamlets Council may have breached European
Law in its handling of the contested Spitalfields Market Development.

Jean's letter to the Commission

Jean Lambert MEP said: "It is a both a legal requirement and best practice
that a full Environmental Impact Assessment is included as part of these
large scale developments from day one, under the Environmental Impact
Assessment Directive."

The European Commission will investigate the complaint with a view to
taking action against the UK Government and Tower Hamlets Council, which
could involve legal action in the European Court and the imposition of
penalties against the local authority.

Jean Lambert MEP added: "Tower Hamlets Council must listen to the valid
concerns of the local community and avoid the threat of protracted legal
action through the European Court".
