Event: Green MEP to speak at
'Parliamentarians Against the War' conference. Place: A V Hill lecture theatre,
University College, London Time: 7.30pm, Wednesday, February 12th, 2003
LONDON Euro-MP Jean Lambert is to represent the Green Party at a conference of parliamentarians opposed to military action in Iraq at University College, London, tomorrow (Wednesday February 12th).
Mrs Lambert will speak alongside MPs representing Labour, the Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru and the Scottish National Party at the 'Parliamentarians Against the War' event.
"This conference shows the strength of opposition to war felt by members of all the major political parties," said Mrs Lambert, London's Green Party MEP.
"This is an issue on which parliamentarians are acting on their consciences and siding with their constituents, even when this is at the expense of the views of their party leaders."
The conference has been organised by the Stop the War Coalition as part of a week of events leading up to Saturday's anti-war rally at Hyde Park, which is expected to attract more than 500,000 demonstrators. It takes place at University College, London, from 7.30pm.
"Any war will be illegal, immoral and counter-productive. War will not be a solution to the threat posed to global peace and security, nor to the desperate humanitarian needs of the Iraqi people," added Mrs Lambert. "I urge anyone opposed to this war to join me on Saturday at what organisers expect to be Britain's biggest ever anti-war rally."
