Memorial
Day Time: TODAY - Tuesday, January 27th, 2004
Place: Council Chamber, Ealing
Town Hall, New Broadway, Ealing W5 2BY
LONDON'S Green MEP Jean Lambert
is to join Ealing Mayor Gurcharan Singh and pupils and staff from a number of
schools in the borough at an exhibition to mark Holocaust Memorial Day at Ealing
Town Hall today.
Mrs Lambert said: "Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity to contemplate the impact of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides and I am delighted Ealing has organised this exhibition to help ensure we never forget the 20th Century's darkest events."
The exhibition, which has been organised by the council, has been on display in the Town Hall foyer since January 19th and will remain on display until February 2nd.
Mrs Lambert, a human rights campaigner and member of the European Parliament 's Civil Liberties Committee, will follow her visit to Ealing by addressing a lobby of MPs organised by the Coalition Against the Asylum Bill at 7pm outside the House of Commons.
She will join representatives of the Jew ish Council for Racial Equality, Liberty and The Refugee Council in calling for the Government to abandon plans to withdraw the right to appeal against rejected asylum applications and take children of rejected applicants into care.
"Holocaust Memorial Day is a reminder that we must learn from the mistakes of history, not repeat them," Mrs Lambert said. "The Asylum Bill in its current form is unfair, discriminatory and runs counter to the principles of natural justice - and, I am sad to say, risks doing exactly that."
