LONDON'S Green Party Euro-MP Jean Lambert has been re-elected to the European Parliament with 159,000 votes - almost double the 87,000 she received in 1999 - thanks to an increased share of a higher turnout in last week's election.
Mrs Lambert today thanked voters and supporters - and promised to represent all Londoners by giving the capital a 'strong, green voice' at the increasingly relevant European Parliament.
Mrs Lambert, 54, a former teacher
who lives in Walthamstow, East London, said: "I am honoured to have been
entrusted with the important job of representing Londoners at Brussels for another
five years - and will continue to give the capital a strong green voice at the
European
Parliament.
"The European Parliament is responsible for legislation which affects our daily lives - on workers' rights, international trade and protecting London's precious green spaces, for example - and I will continue to ensure the interests of peace, social justice and environmental sustainability are heard."
The Walthamstow-based MEP added: "I'd also like to
thank all those individuals supporters who have worked so hard over the course
of this campaign, and those with whom I have had the pleasure of working over
the last five years. I look forward to continue working with them for the next
five - today is day one of the campaign for a sustainable future for London."
