Kurdistan Regional Government And Green MEP Condemn Stoning Of Women

As new evidence has come to light over the stoning of Dua Khalil Aswad, Green MEP Jean Lambert has clarified that the murder of the 17 year old girl has been condemned by the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Jean Lambert has since joined with the Kurdistan Regional Government urging the Iraqi Federal Government to investigate and institute legal proceedings.

Jean Lambert commented; “With 4 arrests being made yesterday over the barbaric killing of Dua Khalil Aswad it is clear that the murder took place in Bashika, Nineveh, which is outside the Kurdistan Regional Government’s jurisdiction.

“I have been informed that in 2002 the Kurdistan National Assembly repealed Iraqi laws that allowed for so called ‘honour killings’ to go unpunished and such changes have since applied to the Kurdistan Regional Government administered areas of Iraq.  With more than 40 convictions since then change is gradually underway.

“It is time the Iraqi Federal Government now changed the law and protected the women of Iraq from such atrocious treatment.”
