Letter: International Lab Day

Jean has sent the following letter to the London press to mark International Lab Day:

Dear Editor,

Every year in Britain, over 3 million animals are used in brutal and unnecessary experiments.  These animals are poisoned, scalded and blinded all in the name of science.  Advancements in modern medical technology mean that this barbaric practice can be consigned to history, but the government has to act to make this happen.

The UK government is set to amend its laws on animal experiments by adopting new rules from the European Union.  This is a crucial opportunity to bring in the widespread use of advanced, non-animal techniques which can deliver good science without needless animal suffering.  By taking the necessary steps to end practices such as household product testing, experiments on monkeys in UK laboratories and by developing and promoting non-animal alternative methods, the UK can play its part in eradicating cruelty to lab animals forever.

With International Lab Day on the 24th April, I urge Londoners to contact their MP to call for an end to animal experimentation and to bring to their attention the practical action that the government can, and must, now take.  Together, we can make a difference.

Yours Sincerely,

Jean Lambert
