The UK’s two Green MEPs are supporting the National March Against the Badger Cull.
The march, which takes place on Saturday 1st June, coincides with the planned start of the UK’s badger cull.
London’s Green MEP, Jean Lambert, will be joining the march. She said:
“Not only is a badger cull cruel but the evidence also suggests it will be ineffective. Rather than causing unnecessary harm to one of the UK’s favourite creatures the Government should be seriously looking into alternative ways to solve the TB problem.
Indeed we should be looking carefully at the way we treat cows and the effect that keeping them in overcrowded conditions has on their chances of catching TB.”
Ms Lambert has previously written to the British government calling for the badger cull to be called off.
Earlier this year Ms Lambert joined her Green Colleague Keith Taylor MEP and guitarist Brian May in campaigning against the cull in the European Parliament.
Keith Taylor, Green MEP for the South East, who cannot join the march due to a parliamentary visit to Poland, said:
“There’s no doubt that TB is affecting the farming industry but a cull simply isn’t an effective solution. I congratulate all those marching on Saturday for their commitment to fighting this pointless and cruel cull.”
Mr Taylor has written to the European Commission asking assistance in halting the spread of TB in the UK so as to decrease the likelihood of this year’s cull.
