09/01/2014 London’s Green Party MEP Jean Lambert is to host a debate between the candidates in an open ‘primary’ to select the faces of a pan-EU campaign for this May’s election to the European Parliament.
Ms Lambert will chair the ‘hustings’-style debate in London next Saturday, January 18th.
There are four candidates – Jose Bove, Ska Keller, Monica Frassoni and Rebecca Harms – and anyone aged 16 or over, regardless of whether they are a Green Party member or not, can vote in an online poll to decide which two will lead the Greens’ EU-wide campaign later this year.
There is more information on the primary – and instructions on how to vote – here.
The primary has been hailed as a significant development in the way EU democracy works.
Ms Lambert said: “Survey after survey tells us most people are pretty uninspired by most politicians – and disconnected from the EU.
“They want more of a say in how the political parties that dominate our democracy – especially at EU level – choose their candidates.
“The Green primary gives people just that – and I hope lots of people will come along to the hustings event – and vote.”
The debate will take place from 2pm on Saturday, January 18th, at the ICO Conference Centre, 22 Berners Street, London W1T 3DD.
Entry is free, but pre-registration is advised to secure a place.
