Jean Lambert, Green MEP for London, was quizzed by school children from the George Green’s School, Tower Hamlets, for a unique Question Time event as part of their GCSE Citizenship studies on Friday 12th October.

Pupils from Years 10 and 11 questioned Jean, alongside other local politicians including John Biggs, London Assembly Member for East London, on the important social issues facing young people today, such as youth unemployment, tuition fees and access to education.  They also quizzed the panel as to how young people can influence the decisions made at a local, national and European level that go on to have significant impact upon their lives.

Pupils also presented projects that they have been working on as part of their Citizenship GCSE studies, which focused on pressing issues of concern to young people and which have been targeted towards elected politicians in an attempt to bring about change and awareness.

Speaking ahead of the visit, Jean, a member of the European Parliament Youth Intergroup, said: “I am delighted to have been invited to the George Green’s School to take part in their Question Time event and to give these dedicated students an insight into the decisions that shape their lives.

“Many young people feel powerless to change the world and can become disengaged from their local communities.  This is why we need to find new ways to turn our youngest generation onto politics.  I am pleased that they invited their local representatives to come along to discuss our views with them.”

Earlier on in the day, Jean also visited the Langley Park School for Girls in Beckenham to talk about her work as an MEP and the workings of the European Parliament.  Jean met with a group of Year 8 pupils to discuss the role of the EU in tackling important global matters such as climate change and air quality.
