MORE than a million Londoners are citizens of other EU countries – and they all have different experiences of accessing their rights while living and working in the capital.

Now London’s Green MEP Jean Lambert is to host an event to bring together EU citizens and experts from around the capital for a discussion on accessing the services, benefits and work to which they are entitled as EU citizens.

“The million-or-so Londoners who identify themselves as nationals of another EU country have rights in the UK in terms of work, social security and political participation,” said Ms Lambert.

“But it’s clear that not everyone knows the rules – and I have decided to host an event to kick off a debate about the rights of everyone living in London, and the benefits to all EU citizens of community participation.

“Hopefully many Europeans will attend, and discuss their individual experiences – good and bad – of life in our vibrant city.”

Entitled: ‘Your London? Europeans in London – rights, challenges, opportunities’, the debate will take place at Europe House in Westminster from 5.30pm on Wednesday, April 10th.

As well as Ms Lambert, speakers include: Anthony Valcke (European Citizens’ Advice Service – ECAS), Oli Henman (National Council of Voluntary Organisations – NCVO), Christine Korcz (Solvit UK) and Anna Komaruk (Broadway Homelessness and Support).

“We are really pleased to have managed to get such high-level speakers,” added Ms Lambert, “but the emphasis of the debate will be on the everyday experiences of many of the Europeans living in London.

“Everyone who comes along will leave with practical knowledge that’ll help them access all their rights as EU citizens.”
