Following the tragic events of 9\/11 Jean expressed her deep sadness and sympthy for those who had lost their lives and their loved ones. She warned, though, against increasing the spiral of violence through reactionary measures which would only lead to further bloodshed.<\/p>\n
“If we truly believe in the values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law, we cannot justify indiscriminate slaughter to bring the guilty to arbitrary justice.”<\/p>\n

Jean emphasised the fact that most Muslims were as appalled as everyone else at the atrocities. She also condemned hate attacks on Muslims and their businesses, schools and places of worship, both in the UK and eleswhere.<\/p>\n
Anti\u2013terrorism regulation in the European Parliament<\/h2>\n
Jean voted against a Council regulation to freeze the assets of a list of organisations suspected of carrying out terrorist activities. Although she agreed with the goal of the regulation, the council by the time of the vote had changed the legal base of it. Jean professed to feeling \u201cvery uncomfortable\u201d with this move, which as well as showing this was a badly prepared, rushed proposal, would eliminate possibilities of Parliamentary scrutiny.
\nIn addition to this concern the proposed list contained only Arab or Muslim names and many MEPs had asked in the committee discussion why European Terrorist groups were not included.<\/p>\nRefugees at Calais centre<\/h2>\n
Jean has made representations on behalf of many refugees resident in London and met with refugees, many of whom were from Afghanistan, at Sangatte, the disputed Red Cross centre near the Eurotunnel depot outside Calais.<\/p>\n
\u201cVisiting Sangatte and talking to the people there was a moving experience. These are people who are treated and portrayed as criminals by the press and the government, when in fact they are simply normal people \u2013 many of them barely out of their teens \u2013 fleeing injustice and striving for a better life.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the visit Jean called on the UK and other Governments to consider that their policies are dealing with people\u2019s lives, not just numbers.<\/p>\n
Jean has continued to support measures to ensure Afghan refugees are treated fairly and humanely. She has been particularly active in the struggle to close down the illegal prison in Guantanamo Bay<\/a> and release detainees who have not been charged to to safety. She has also voiced her opposition to the UK arms trade and the DSEi arms fair<\/a> held in London.<\/p>\n
