London Energy Conference

'Moving to renewable energy sources in an energy efficient London'

Co-hosted by Jean Lambert, Green MEP for London
and Victor Anderson, Green Member of the London Assembly

11 October 2002
Assembly Chamber, City Hall, The Queens Walk, London
09.15 - 17.00

Introduction:

In the words of the Draft London Energy Strategy, its key aim is to 'reduce London's contribution to global climate change, tackle the problem of fuel poverty and, at the same time, promote London's economic development through renewable and energy efficient technologies'.

The Mayor is committed to adopting both a carbon dioxide emissions reduction target and a renewable energy target for London, as well as targets for specific renewable energy technologies, by the end of the year. These targets are to be developed and agreed through stakeholder consensus in a consultation process. The London Sustainable Development Commission will play a coordinating role in this process.

This is a crucial time for planning London's energy use. Green London Assembly Member, Victor Anderson, and Green MEP for London, Jean Lambert, want to help set challenging targets in the context of energy efficiency through discussion with stakeholders.

The Aim:

o Hear from European experts about the deployment of renewable energy technologies in major cities.
o Explore the potential for the development of renewable energy technologies in London.
o Explore the potential for energy efficiency in the London office sector.
o Discuss the setting of energy targets for London.

Key Issues:

o To what extent do we need to set targets for reducing energy consumption prior
to agreeing renewable energy targets?
o What renewable energy technologies can be successfully deployed in London?
o What part should the various technologies play in fulfilling the targets?
o What support can the European Union offer London, both financially and through
the experiences of other major cities?
o Who should be involved in the implementation of the targets?

Who came:

A wide range of stakeholders showed an interest in attending this conference, including energy specialists, practitioners, business and the voluntary sectors, the construction industry, local planners, and media (download delegate list).
