Sardar Attique Ahmad Khan, Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir has told of his plans for a ‘green and skilled Kashmir’ as he met with UK Green MEP Jean Lambert, whilst on a nine day long European visit.

Yesterday evening’s meeting with the Prime Minister, coincides with today’s debate and vote on the European Parliament’s controversial report focusing on Kashmir’s present situation and future prospects.  Jean Lambert, who has tabled many of the record breaking 450 amendments to the report, has previously called for political space to enable the people of Kashmir to move forward peacefully and today welcomed the Prime Minister’s desire for a green future in Kashmir.

As a member of the European Parliament’s Delegation to South Asia and the SAARC Region Jean commented; “Prime Minister Khan has expressed his wish to reach a peaceful settlement and make a positive step forward in Kashmir where the situation currently affects over 13 million people.

“It is vital that we now ensure Kashmir has the opportunity to explore any possible peaceful solutions for the long term that will also aid environmental and economic development in the region following the recent earthquake.”

As part of his visit the Prime Minister will meet with elected representatives of the European Parliament, opinion makers and Kashmir and Pakistani community leaders.

‘The people of Kashmir need political space to move forward peacefully’, Green Euro MP, Jean Lambert, told the International Council for Human Rights (ICHR) and the Kashmir Centre at a roundtable in Brussels today.

With Human Rights Day approaching this weekend (Sunday 10th December) and President Musharraf’s most recent offer for Pakistan to renounce its claim to Kashmir, if India also makes a similar move. Jean Lambert said she hoped there was now a chance for Kashmir to explore peaceful solutions ensuring everyone benefited from their human rights.

Speaking after the roundtable discussion Jean, who has been awarded for her work on Justice and Human Rights, commented; “President Musharraf’s offer to renounce Pakistan’s rights to Kashmir is a welcome step forward for the people living there as well as benefiting international relations between India, Pakistan and the rest of the world.

“The Government however need the support of the people in order to make this new opportunity work effectively and this could be a problem in the region of Kahmir. The people of Kashmir now need political space in which to explore peaceful solutions. The authorities have to respect human rights to allow that to happen.”

Today’s roundtable discussed the topic of human rights in the face of terrorism and aimed to remind states of their obligations under international law to uphold human rights and international freedoms.
