Jean visits EU funded Sri Lankan hospital

Jean is pictured with local children outside the Toppur Division Hospital, Sri Lanka during a European Parliament South Asia delegation trip in May. The Toppur Hospital, which has recently been upgraded to include a new female ward and an ambulance garage, is funded by the EU Returnee Assistant Project and supported by the German Red Cross.
Jean signs Parkinson's Pledge
Jean marked World Parkinson's Day by signing up to the 'Pledge for Parkinson's'; an EU wide initiative aimed at raising awareness of the chronic disease. By signing up to the pledge, Jean has become part of the Parkinson's Disease Support Network, which is committed to ensuring the condition becomes an EU healthcare policy priority. There are currently more than 1.2 million people living with Parkinson's in Europe, a number that is expected to double by 2030.
Jean meets Aung San Suu Kyi on Parliament trip to Burma
Jean was honoured to meet Aung San Suu Kyi during the European Parliament's first ever delegation trip to Burma. The EU has had diplomatic and trade sanctions in place since the National League for Democracy election victory of 1990 was set aside by the military; thousands of activists were imprisoned on a variety of charges and Aung San Suu Kyi herself was placed under house arrest. The NLD has since won over 40 seats in a recent by-election.
Jean calls for accessible transport network
Jean joined Green London Assembly Member, Jenny Jones and local Lambeth Green campaigners to demand that the Mayor of London take positive action to make the city's transport network accessible for all Londoners by 2018. Jean and Jenny visited Stockwell tube, currently inaccessible for wheelchair users, to highlight the difficulties experienced by those with physical disabilities when using the tube.
Jean visits Finchley High Road
During March, Jean visited Finchley High Road to meet with local business owners who are calling for improvements to their high street. Jean heard about Barnet Council's new parking policy, which has seen the introduction of pay-by-phone parking; a move which has added further problems to small businesses already struggling in the straitened financial climate. Jean takes part in Strasbourg ACTA protest
Jean joined her Green/EFA colleagues, including Keith Taylor, Green MEP for the South East, outside the European Parliament to protest against the controversial Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. ACTA was created with the aim of establishing international stanadrds on intellectual property rights enforcement, yet will deal with tools targeting internet distribution and information technology, meaning people could be prosecuted for merely sharing a link to a newspaper article or posting a video to YouTube.
Jean calls for Guantanamo closure
In January, Jean spoke at a special demonstration at Trafalgar Square to mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of Guantanamo Bay. Jean argued that the very existence of the prison is counterproductive to the human rights goals that the international community is seeking to achieve, and that Guantanamo must be closed without delay.
Jean visits Stratford Domestic Violence Advice Surgery
Jean and Green London Assembly Member, Jenny Jones, visited the one-stop shop for sufferers of domestic violence at the Stratfod Advice Surgery to see the comprehensive support on offer for those struggling with incidences of abuse. In the last 12 months alone, there have been 46,000 incidences of domestic abuse across the capital, yet vital support services are under threat of closure due to cuts in public funding. Jean meets with Greenwich Pensioners' Forum
Jean met with the Greenwich Pensioners' Forum on Friday 28th October to give a unique insight into the life of an MEP and the workings of the European Parliament. Forum members quizzed Jean on her areas of work and activities as London's Green Member of the European Parliament, as well as pressing local and national issues such as care for older people, pensioners' tax credits and age discrimination.
Jean visits Occupy London
During October, Jean visited the Occupy London Stock Exchange camp to meet with the hundreds of people who congregated in the city united in the fight to tackle corporate greed, rising unemployment and tax injustice. Jean spoke with a number of activisits about their ideas for a fairer and more sustainable future, free from the blight of the global economic system which has led to growing inequality, draconian spending cuts and colossal bank bail-outs.
Jean calls for end to long distance animal transports
Jean has lent her support to an EU-wide campaign seeking to bring an end to the long distance transportation of farmed animals. The 8hours campaign, led by Dan Jorgenson, Danish MEP and Chair of the European Parliament's Intergroup for Animal Welfare is calling for an eight hour limit to live transportation. Jean demands the Living Wage for all employees
Jean has written to the UK's top private sector companies urging them to commit to paying a Living Wage to all employees, a move which could potentiall lift hundreds of thousands of low paid staff out of working poverty. It is estimated that there are some 3.5 million people in the UK over the age of 22 earning less than £7 an hour. In London alone, over 470,000 people work in low paid positions. Jean is pictured with Matthew Butcher from campaign group Fair Pensions who are calling for the National Minimum Wage to be replaced by the Living Wage.
Jean attends launch of East London Green Jobs Alliance
In September, Jean attended the launch of the East London Green Jobs Alliance; a new grassroots coalition of trade unions, NGOs and community organisations working together to create green and decent jobs for East London citizens. Starting within the five boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Newham, Waltham Forest and Greenwich, the Alliance will seek to stimulate the local green economy and provide training and jobs for local people, especially the young and unemployed.
Jean demands an end to kettling outside European Court of Human Rights
In September, Jean demanded an end to the use of the controversial 'kettling' technique at a special gathering outside the European Court of Human Rights. The event took place as the ECHR Grand Chamber prepared to consider the legality of the corralling and containing of public protests in a case brought by London residen, Lois Austin, rearding the kettling of some 3,000 protestors at the May Day 2001 demonstrations. Jean meets winners of Charlemagne Youth Prize
In June, Jean met with the team behind ‘Europe & Me', a UK online lifestyle magazine for young Europeans which won the prestigious Charlemagne Youth Prize 2011. Created in 2007 by eight students from across Europe, the publication has now built up a readership of more then 20,000 from 20 different countries. The team travelled to Europe House to meet with Jean and fellow panel judge and London MEP Marina Yannaokoudakis.
Jean speaks at Roma film screening
In July, Jean attended a special screening of the award-winning documentary, ‘Vortex' which follows the lives of young Roma children and their families living in poverty in a remote village in rural Hungary. The showing, which took place at The Hub in Canning Town, was arranged by Newham New Deal Partnership as part of a series of evenings which focus on the Eastern European community in Newham.
Jean joins EU Fish Fight campaign
Jean signed up to a new Europe-wide campaign which seeks to end the wasteful practice of fish discards on the 31st of May, 2011. The Fish Fight campaign, led by celebrity chef and campaigner Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, is calling upon the European Parliament to reform its fishing policy in order to ensure sustainable fishing for future generations. Jean is pictured with the special boat-shaped Fish Fight counter, which shows how many people have signed up to the campaign so far.
Jean speaks at European Greens press briefing on nuclear power
Jean held a special European Greens press briefing on the implications of the Committee for Climate Change's ‘Renewable Energy Review' during May to warn of the dangers of an energy policy founded on nuclear power. Jean was joined at the briefing by a panel of esteemed nuclear and renewable experts including Claude Turmes MEP, Vice-President of the Greens/EFA Group; Dr Doug Parr, Chief Scientist for Greenpeace UK; Dr Gordon Edge, Director of the Policy for RenewableUK and Dr Paul Dorfman, Founding Co-ordinator of the Nuclear Consulting Group.
Jean joins Camden school children to raise plight of Palestinian child prisoners
Jean met with a group of Camden school children to take receipt of thousands of letters bound for the European Parliament highlighting the dire situation faced by Palestinian child prisoners languishing in Israeli jails. The children were joined by twelve young people from Palestinian town Abu Dis as part of a special week-long visit organised by the Camden Abu Dis Friendship Association, a local human rights charity.
Jean visits Greenwich Meantime Brewery
Continuing her search for good examples of green jobs, Jean visited the Greenwich Meantime Brewery, one of the capital's largest independent breweries, to learn how the business is making a lasting and sustainable contribution to its local community and environment. Jean hosts maternal mortality photo exhibition
Jean hosted a special European Parliament maternal mortality photo exhibition on the 3rd May, 2011 to urge world leaders to continue to fund global initiatives that will ensure a healthy pregnancy and safe childbirth for all. The display marked the 5th annual Mothers' Night, an event held each year to draw attention to the UN Millennium Development Goal 5 which aims to reduce maternal mortality and achieve universal access to reproductive health services.
Jean highlights air pollution in London
Jean visited the air monitoring station on Euston Road to highlight the dangerous levels of air pollution in the capital on the 24th April, 2011. London's air pollution has now breached safety standards for more than 35 days this year, resulting in a breach of EU air quality standards and a possible £300 million fine for the taxpayer.
Jean marches against public spending cuts
Jean took to the streets to join the hundreds of thousands of people using their feet to protest against the government's public spending cuts on the 25th March, 2011. The March for the Alternative, led by the TUC, united people from across the country opposed to the package of austerity measures which have damaged public services and increased unemployment.

Jean attended the launch of the new European Network Against Racism research report ‘Shadow Report on Racism in Europe' on the 22nd March, 2011. As Vice President of the European Parliament's Intergroup on Anti-Racism and Diversity, Jean was invited to take part in a panel discussion which assessed how EU Member States are tackling discrimination and prejudice. Jean joined ENAR in stressing the need for vast improvement in the way Member
States implement anti-discrimination legislation.
The premiere of 'What is a green job?'
Jean at the launch of her new documentary 'What is a green job?' at the Arcola Theatre, Hackney, on 3 February, 2011, with Ben Todd, Executive Director of the theatre, and Sion Whellens of Calverts printing coop. Both sustainable businesses feature in the film, along with Acornhouse Restaurant, which explore how green jobs need to address both ecological and social objectives.
Asylum Aid report launch

As a long-time campaigner ,for the rights of asylum seekers Jean was invited to be the keynote speaker. Jean joined Asylum Aid in stressing the need for vast improvements in the way asylum decisions are reached for women who desperately need access to refugee protection.
Jean marches against racism

Jean pictured following her opening speech to thousands of people gathered to march against racism, fascism and Islamophobia at a national demonstration in central London in November, 2010. The demonstration organised by Unite Against Fascism and backed by the TUC, the Muslim Council of Britain and a range of trade union leaders, faith and community groups.

Jean joins a panel of fellow MEPs who were quizzed by sixth former pupils about the role of Europe at a special event at Europe House, the new UK headquarters of the European Commission and European Parliament in December, 2010. The event was chaired by Channel 4 news reader Jon Snow and other panelists included Nigel Farage, the leader of UKIP and MEP for South East, Charles Tannock, Conservative MEP for London and Sarah Ludford, Liberal MEP for London and Richard Howitt, Labour MEP for East of England.

Jean highlights humanitarian crisis in Pakistan

Spark in the Park

The public event was the highlight of London's programme for 2010 The European Year for Combating Poverty & Social Exclusion (EY2010) and offered opportunity for workers, volunteers and users of voluntary and community organisations across London to come together to showcase anti-poverty activities and make the case for an income people can live on in dignity.

Jean hosts screening of LGBT rights film
Jean and her fellow MEP Ulrike Lunacek (Austria) hosting a reception and screening of 'Beyond the Pink Curtain' at the European Parliament on 22 June, 2010. The film is directed by freelance journalist and writer/director Matthew Charles (centre), and looks at homophobic attitudes that are still rife in eastern Europe. The screening was followed by a debate.
Jean joins march against nuclear trains

Jean addressing campaigners demanding the end of nuclear waste trains travelling through the Olympic site in east London. The group marched from Victoria Park in Tower Hamlets to Stratford. The march drew attention to the danger posed to Londoners by the regular movement of radioactive waste from power stations in southern and eastern England to Sellafield. The ‘nuke trains' travel along the Northern London Line which passes through the Olympic Park, just a few dozen metres from the Aquatics Centre.
Jean welcomes Keith Taylor, Green MEP, to the parliament

Jean welcoming Keith Taylor, the new Green MEP for South East England to the European Parliament. Keith took over the position from Caroline Lucas, who was elected as the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion in May. The pair have sinced worked together on a number of issues, including animal protection, LGBT rights and climate change.
Jean leads delegation to Nepal
Jean led a delegation to Nepal in May, 2010. The visit coincided with an announcement of progress on a new Constitution and a statement about the next steps to be taken in the democratic process. Jean is Chair of the Delegation for relations with South Asia. During the trip, the inter-parliamentary group of six MEPs met with various political figures, including the President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to discuss the new proposed Constitution for Nepal, which was announced on 29 May. The delegation also addressed issues of climate change and the refugee situation, by visiting two retreating glaciers and a small-scale bio-gas project (pictued above), as well as a refugee centre.
Jean speaks at launch of DVD addressing 'honour-based violence'
Jean speaking at the launch of a new training DVD about so-called honour-based violence at Amnesty International on 26 March, 2010. The film, titled 'For Honour and Love', was produced by the Kurdish and Middle Eastern Women's Organisation in collaboration with 18 And Under and the Nationwide Foundation and explores the shocking aspects of honour based violence, such as the threat of honour killing, forced marriage, female genital mutilation and issues relating to isolation and control.

The protest was organised by the Kurdish Human Rights Project, of which Jean is an Advisor on Environmental Rights. Emilie, who represents the Danish Socialist People's Party, met with the Young Mayor of Lewisham, Green London Assembly Member Darren Johnson (pictured above), and spoke with young people about the issue in Westminster.
Jean visits Bangladesh

Jean has been actively campaigning against adding further capacity at Heathrow as she doesn't believe that the development is in the interests of her London constituents. London already suffers from poor air quality and the proposed third runway will simply make matters worse as well as increase noise levels, traffic and carbon emissions. Jean protests against the deportation of Iraqi asylum seekers
For many years Jean has raised the alarm about Iraqi asylum seekers who have come to the UK for refuge. Other countries in the Middle East have taken in millions of Iraqis who have fled thier homeland since the war began in 2003. The UK has refused to offer asylum to Iraqis and is now forcing them to return to Iraq before it is safe.

Stop the War rally in Trafalgar Square
Jean and fellow Green MEP Caroline Lucas attended the Stop the War march and rally in March 2008. The Green Party were strong opponents of the war in Iraq and regularly campaign for peace in all parts of the world.
AGE panel meeting in European Parliament
Jean hosts an event in the European Parliament with AGE, the European Older People's Platform, to discuss legislation to prevent age discrimination. Jean is a member of the cross party Intergroup on Ageing and is regularly meets with age organisations.
Launch of the European Refugee Advocacy Service
Jean helped to launch of the European Refugee Advocacy Service, an organisation run by refugees to support and give advice to new arrivals in the UK.
Guantanamo action on sixth anniversary

On the sixth anniversary of the opening of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, Jean took part in a number of actions across London to call for the immediate charge or release of the remaining prisoners. This photo was taken outside the East London Mosque in Whitechapel where Jean leafleted with local campaigners about a coordinated action on the anniversary in Parliament Square.
University of East London visit to European Parliament

Jean meets students from the Amnesty group at the University of East London in the European Parliament. Jean often hosts meetings with groups from London's schools, colleges and universities in Brussels to discuss her role as an MEP and the European Union.
