Green MEP Calls For Close Monitoring Of Care On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

As the world celebrates Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Green MEP and Co-President of the European Parliament’s Intergroup on ageing, Jean Lambert has called for close monitoring of older people in care to ensure the live in safety.

Launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) AGE, the day calls for action from national, local and European policy makers and citizens to raise awareness and eradicate elder abuse and neglect, which currently goes unchallenged or even unidentified.

Jean, who is Green MEP for London and launched the Mayor of London’s Older People’s Strategy in Brussels earlier in the year, said; “The abuse of those in their own homes and care homes by relatives and care workers is completely unacceptable.

“With the increasing awareness of the growing levels of abuse it is obvious that there is a desperate need to monitor services more carefully.  Older people have a right to feel secure wherever they live but this needs supervision and adequate level of resources.  Abuse is a crime.  It therefore needs to be treated appropriately.”
